Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen Rezension bezieht sich auf: Unclean Spirits: Book One of the Black Sun's Daughter (Taschenbuch) Okay, actually, the writing here is not all that bad. I do have to admit that the style could be a lot worse, yet what you get is still below average. Did I mention that you get a first person narrator?

However, bad style alone would not have sufficed to ruin this book, because the plot as such is not all bad. But. The author succeeds in but one thing, and that would be boring her reader and the only thing that actually kept me from falling asleep was wondering whether the main character was quite alright in the head; it starts with Jayné (whose name is mispronounced countless times throughout the book--bu-huh) wearing her dead uncle's clothes. She continues to have huge issues with killing which then are quickly enough abandoned, there's a sex scene which is also more boring than anything and doesn't fit into the general outline of the plot, I was wondering how much a reader should know about the main character's dirty bras and why almost all the other male charaters were so boring and juvenile and then, thankfully, it was over. Oh yeah, the good guys won, big surprise there...

Really, there isn't much more there. It's about 370 pages and you could have done it in half that... The parts of the plot that were promising were not well enough developed to capture my interest and logical errors kept bothering me. Here a few examples (in no particular order) so that you may be bothered also:
-Professional and super-powerful uncle of main character is offed by just a few bad boys. Huh?
-main character's love interest ends up comatose in hospital and is basically left there like vegetable tends to be left in the fridge. She only thinks about checking up on him a few days later.
-One of the good guys abandons the band of brothers w/out telling anyone to do something chivalrous that completely escaped me. How did the bad guys know about this exactly?
-The neighbors never noticed anything. The cops never noticed anything. Nobody ever noticed nothing. Talk about ignorance and bliss.
-the whole mojo that is introduced in this novel lacks logic and explanation as do the supernatural beings and their world. If it gets any clearer in the second part, I suppose that would be my loss since I really do not feel up to the task to reading a sequel.
-didn't really get the title either.

Another issue that somewhat bothers me is that the main character does not come across as that tough girl the cover makes her out to be. Sorry.

Good urban fantasy is hard to find. If you want something that is so-so and has a lot of heart-warming love in it, I recommend Wonderous Strange by Livingston. For younger readers, Hush, Hush by Fitzpatrick will be appealing (also contains True Love). Unlundun by Mieville is beautiful, even if you are an older reader I think. Neverwhere by Gaiman of course is very much at the top of the list because it comes back to you and/or stays with you. Unclean Spirits, sadly, does not.
